Festive time for Maestro Ilayarajas fans! Two of his albums have hit the stores in a months time! Potharaju is the Telugu version of Kamal Hassans Tamil hit Virumandi. It was critically acclaimed for its innovative screenplay and melodious music. This film is going to test the waters of Tollywood this week.
Virumandi album featured as many as 10 songs, six of them sung by Kamal hassan himself. Its music was mainly folk based, with typical Madhurai slang. Seems like the telugu makers have taken enough care to induce telugu nativity into the album. Lyricist Vennelakanti scores with his simple, yet meaningful translation of lyrics.
To top it all, we have SP Balasubrahmanyam singing for Ilayaraja after almost 5 years, preminchedi endukamma being the latest one in their combo. With all due respect to Kamal Hassans singing talent, six songs by him in the tamil version of this album was a little too much to take. SPB induces life into the telugu version, making the songs sound more polished and refreshing.
Ilayaraja has always reserved his best for Kamal Hassan. Their combination churned countless classic albums in Telugu and Tamil. Does Pothuraju live upto the standards set by this duo? Lets see.
Nuvvu tappa [SP Balasubrahmanyam, Sujatha]: 5/5
One of the most melodious compositions in the recent times. Its a slow paced tune with rhythmic beat throughout. Just focus on the way pallavi transforms into the interludes and then to the stanzas, the flow never breaks. Kamalhassan penned the original lyric and Vennalakanti did a decent translation. Sujathas voice is strictly OK. Shreya Ghosal sounded much better in the original version. SPB is as usual, at his best.
Kommalaku poolu chutti [SP Balasubrahmanyam, Chorus]: 4.5/5
What an intro! A perfect blend of folk beats, sax, trumpet and a whole suite of other instruments. This song is an instant winner for its infectious rhythm and interlude. Pallavi is by a chorus and charanam is by SPB. The tune kind of takes a frivolous turn in the stanzas with some situational and funny lyric. Tamil version had chorus singing in Madhurai slang. Thankfully, telugu version sticks to chaste telugu.
Andagaada Andagaada [Swarnalatha] 4.5/5
Another instant winner in the album. Though the tune and the beat are catchy, its the anupallavi that makes the impact in the first hearing. The violin interlude is breezy and makes you hit the replay button quite a few times. Swarnalathas rustic voice goes well with the song and so does the lyric.
Chitti chepamma [Chorus] 4.5/5
Chorus version of the above song. This song has been cut short to a bit in the telugu version. Original had Kamal hassans voice teasing the heroine.
Intiki Deepam [SP Balasubrahmanyam] 2.5/5
A pathos song, rendered brilliantly by SPB. He makes best use of his voice to bring out the emotional turmoil of the character. The lyric is situational. Tune and interludes are gloomy, keeping up with the situation. However, the tune is not up to the mark.
Pilisthe palike [SP Balasubrahmanyam, Chorus] 2.5/5
Appears to be heros introduction song. Its quite a unique song composition with heavy precessions. SPB skewed his voice to bring in the desired effect. But the tune leaves a lot to be desired.
Tarikita Tarikita [Chorus] N/A
A full length tamil song got reduced to a bit song in the telugu version, due to the nativity factor. The art form used in Tamil version is equivalent to burra katha in Andhra. It narrates the tale of Pothuraju. Aforementioned producers effort to retain telugu nativity is evident here.
With 4 out of 7 songs hitting the 4+ rating, this album is a must buy for the Maestros fans. Others? They wouldnt be disappointed either. So, does the album live up to the expectations? You bet!
