Director Hari should be commended for giving a no-nonsense, no vulgarity, non-violent pure family entertainer, Ayyaa. Sarath Kumar steals the show and his mind-blowing performance as Ayyaa is sure to fetch him a National award.
The entire film unfolds in a village Ambasamudram in Tenkasi. Ayyadurai (elder Sarath Kumar) and Madasamy (Napolean) belonging to two different castes are close friends who toil for the welfare of their people. Both of them strive to maintain peace and harmony in the village. They help the people in the village overcome a famine. However, Ayyadurai kills the corrupt local MLA accidentally for smuggling rice during the famine.
Ayyadurai marries Kalyani (Lakshmi) and their only son is Chelladurai (younger Sarath). Years roll by and Ayyadurai is treated like God by the villagers and becomes an independent MLA only to continue his good work for them. Trouble comes in the form of Karuppasamy (Prakash Raj). Son of the MLA killed by Ayyadurai, Karuppasamy�s only aim is to do away with Ayyadurai and become an MLA. But all his attempts to kill Ayyadurai are foiled by Chelladurai who saves his father on time. Chelladurai also commands the same respect as his father in the village. When Madasamy's daughter Selvi (Nayantara) falls in love with Chelladurai and their wedding gets finalized, Karuppasamy steps in, stops the wedding and also hatches a conspiracy to separate Ayyaduari and Madasamy. The trick works and Madasamy, a changed man treats Ayyadurai like an enemy.
The rest is all about the father and son striving hard to set all things right in the village and teach Karuppasamy a lesson in a non-violent method. The message, �humans can only make laws, but it is the ultimate God who punishes every one. You should have a pure white heart and then only you can wear a white dhothi� is clearly brought out by Hari through the characters Ayyadurai and Chelladurai.
Reminding one of Kamaraj, the simplest politician and a do gooder, Ayyaa�s character is carved out well. Sarath Kumar at his career best walks away with all honours in the title role. Be it his body language or delivery of dialogues or looks, one could see the utmost care taken by the director and the actor. It appears as if the whole script has been written keeping Sarath in mind. Napoleon on his part is equally good. Prakash Raj has given a splendid feat. Debutant Nayanatara is a fresh and pretty. She plays with confidence and sure to go places. Lakshmi and Rohini (as Napolean�s wife) do their part well. Vadivelu provides the comedy fill. Malavika appears in a cameo role in a single dance number. Bharadwaj�s music and rerecording is a major plus point to the film. Priyan�s camera is brilliant. On the whole, a clean family entertainer.

"Ayyaa" ... appealing family drama.
EVERY FRAME of Kavithalaya's "Ayyaa" (barring the pace-spoiling duets) has a commanding dignity about it. In many ways "Ayyaa" reminds you of the appealing family drama of yesteryear cinema, provided by veterans such as Bhim Singh � the kind you could think back, savour and enjoy for long. Amid frivolous pranks and crude take-offs in the name of romance, the bond of friendship and the strong family ties the film dwells upon, are refreshing. So what if "Ayyaa" has melodrama and stereotypes? Other positives make up for the clich�s.
Ayyadurai (Sarath Kumar) is a much-respected politician whose only goal is the unity and welfare of his village. However much Karuppusamy (Prakashraj) tries to drive a wedge between the people and Ayyadurai, and also between the old man and his long time friend Maadasamy (Napoleon), he fails. And when he eventually succeeds it is despair in the homes of the two friends. Things do end well, but not before the elderly Ayyadurai is incarcerated on a murder charge. Nothing very new about the story all right yet in the screenplay and in the natural reactions of characters Hari proves his skill.
Suitable dual role
"Ayyaa" is another memorable dual role for Sarath. At no point do you even vaguely feel that Ayyadurai and his son Chelladurai are played by the same actor. The calm, quiet and honest father and the upright, considerate and decorous son are characters that charm the viewer. Their creator Hari and enactor Sarath can feel proud. And if Sarath is the epitome of dignity, so is Napoleon, as an apt foil. Both when he is friendly and when he turns fiery Napoleon does a splendid job with his expressive eyes and impressive dialogue to boot.
Nayantara, the new heroine, does a neat job of the role, but why does the young lady have to wear costumes that only help to highlight the flab? Rohini gets one scene to prove her mettle and she doesn't let the opportunity slip. Lakshmi, who appears on the big screen after quite a while, contributes her mite to the melodrama. However her experience comes to the fore in the scene she confronts Napoleon, when he slaps her son. Sindhu has practically no dialogue, but her eyes effectively convey the agony of being a bad man's wife.
The comedy track that has nothing to do with the main storyline, and the commercial norm of three songs and dances in every film, hamper the narration a great deal. Even if the rest is inevitable, Hari could have done away with the last duet. The rude manner in which Napoleon and his family are made to wait at the door before Ayyadurai decides about the marriage of their offspring is not only strange and insulting but also unwarranted!
Kadhir's art deserves kudos and so does V. T. Vijayan's editing. Priyan's enticing cinematography stands out in many a sequence. Action choreography, Super Subbarayan style, adds to the verve of the stunt scenes. Most of the time, one song (generally a solo) stands out among Bharadwaj's compositions in a film � in "Ayyaa" it is "Ayyaa Dhora... "
A solid (though familiar) storyline supported by a strong screenplay, astute touches and a natural approach, show that writer-director Hari's success with "Saami" was not a mere flash in the pan.

First thing first, Hari's Ayya is perfect family fare! Sarath Kumar is brilliant in his dual role as father and son. The director's ability to weave together a family drama set in rural milieu in a typical Sooraj Bharjatya style with no villains, vulgarity, and crude commercial elements is commendable. However the plot does lapse into predictability sometimes, with an extremely manipulated climax where everyone is nice and the only bad man turning a new leaf with the hero's lecture!
Ayyadurai (Sarath Kumar) and Madaswamy (Napolean) are close friends who control 10 towns and villages in and around Ambasamudram, Tenkasi maintaining peace and communal harmony. Ayyadurai is an MLA and sort of a God to the people of the place as he treats them as an extension of his own family consisting of wife Kalyani (Lakshmi) and only son Chelladurai (Sarath Kumar).Their only enemy is Karuppusamy (Prakash Raj) son of a corrupt MLA whom Ayyadurai had accidentally killed years back during a famine after he tried to smuggle rice.
Karuppuswamy's only aim in life is to eliminate Ayyadurai and become the local MLA but all his attempts are thwarted by Chelladurai who saves his father at the right time. Chelladurai is also a do-gooder and an ideal son who lives for his parents and villagers. Selvi (Nayantara) is Madaswamy's daughter who has a silent admiration towards Chelladurai that slowly turns into love. Both the families agree for the wedding but Karuppuswamy intervenes and stops the wedding and thereby sowing seeds of enemity between Ayyadurai and Madaswamy.
The rest of the film is all about the father and son trying to bring back peace between both the families and also changing Karuppuswamy into a Good Samaritan in a totally non-violent manner. The message that Hari conveys through his protagonist.We have the right only to advice and it is up to God to make the punishment. At a time when heroes of Tamil cinema take law into their hands this message is loud and clear.
The Ayya character has been etched out of Kamaraj, the Lion of Virudhanagar, one of the finest politician and do-gooder of Tamilnadu. It is Sarath Kumar eighth dual role but Ayya will remain his career best. He comes alive and captures the zest and passion called for by the script. Be it his flawless soft dialogue delivery, body language and the voice modulation he is astounding. No two ways about it, Sarath Kumar is the soul of Ayya.
All the others in the supporting cast like Napoloean, Lakshmi, Rohini are brilliant. Prakash Raj as Karuppuswamy reworks his Ghilli role while Nayantara has made a sensational debut in Tamil. She looks pretty and confident and is sure to go places. Priyan's camera has etched the lush greenery of Ambasamudram with all its hills and meadows. Bharadwaj's melodious music is an added attraction in the film especially the 'Oru Vaartha Solla' and other numbers.
Though Hari tends to be preachy at times, he has packaged the film with essential commercial ingredients like Vadivel's comedy track where the plight of a running a C-class theatre owner is brought out effectively. Added to that, the romantic bits between a minor girl and a man in his early 30's are brought out well. Another highlight is the bonding between the father and son is told in a subtle manner.
Verdict: Clean Family Entertainer

Bala Krishna wants to remake a Tamil failure!
Balakrishna is currently acting in a movie, directed by P.Vasu. This flick is an action-sentiment mixer slated for Dasara. But even before the film could release, Balayya seems to have set his eye on remaking a film from Tamil.
But the film he wants to remake is raising eyebrows of Tollywood people.
Is Tollywood so hard up for stories and script? Looks so. Otherwise why would anybody want to remake a Tamil film that is a confirmed failure? The news is that ‘Ayya’, a film starring Sarath Kumar that has bombed long back in Tamil, is going to be remade in Telugu by Balakrishna. Of course, an official word is still awaited on the subject. But it sure shows the desperation of Tollywood.
