Musings on Pokiri and the next Super Star

The next superstar of telugu cinema has finally arrived. Helped by an able director, Mahesh portrays the character with immense ease.He has got the looks, attitude and above all, the talent to make it big in the industry looking for its next Giga/Tera star.

I used to rue about how he was misusing his talent with run-of-the-mill scripts. While Okkadu provided a glimpse of his talent, Athadu helped in consolidating it. With Pokiri, he has fulfilled the promise.

The movie is just another violent, stereotypical action movie. The high point of movie though, is the director's conviction in narrating the tale. Puri has taken great care in etching the hero's character and the film is hinged on its screenplay. Too much of violence might shun a section of crowd from watching the movie.

Though violence is an integral part of such themes, we have had directors who have essayed similar stories without a drop of blood. Ramgopal Verma is a master of inflicting blows on the audience without even shedding a bit of flesh. Coming to think of it, Trivikram meted out almost a similar treatment in Athadu without acoustic exuberance(read noise). Violence is a state of mind and it takes a great director to portray it effectively.

Veering past the gory details, it was refreshing to see the excellent chemistry between Mahesh and Illeana. This girl definitely has killer looks and matches Mahesh frame to frame. Puri has a great sense of beauty and it shows in each scene. He also brings a touch of sophistication to the way he deals with the songs. Rap and salsa are finally making way into telugu industry. Mani Sharma has managed to embed these elements seamlessly into the music and it definitely helps provide a different feel to the movie. This also goes to show why rerecording is such an important aspect of a movie.

I am personally against comedy tracks and songs that slow down the flow of a story. The comedy track of Ali-Brahmanandam has exactly done that.

With Brahmanandam's character, the nerd stereotype has made a solid entry into telugu mainstream. And, its here to stay. I am sure there will be many more movies with comic software engineers parading around.

On the whole, I liked the movie for its visual excellence and the lead pair.
