What’s in a name? Well, the success or failure of a film, if astrologer Prasad Naidu is to be believed. “For any film’s success, 60 per cent depends on its title,” says Naidu, an astrologer who practices what he calls sound vibration astrology to pick auspicious film titles. He also predicts a film’s fate at the box-office even before its release just from its title. According to Naidu, “the selection of the title is important for any film. There are positive and negative vibrations in the name which impact the film’s success,”
He forecasted the box office outcomes for all the Tollywood films released in 2005 on his website as soon as their titles were announced. “Almost 95 per cent of my predictions are right,” he claims. And he seems to have back up from the industry. Rajendra Kumar, a film writer says, “I check his forecasts about films, and 90 per cent of the predictions were right.”
A native of Nellore, Naidu has been practising astrology for the last 25 years. But he developed an itch to do something different and decided to go to Chennai to study under Srinivas Iyengar, a well-known astrologer. “At that time, most of the commercial institutions and big companies were consulting Srinivas Iyengar about their company names and new business ventures. I learnt a lot from him and thought I would try to implement his method to the names of films,” says Naidu.
With that, he began his research, applying techniques of numerology, astrology and grammar to more than 5,000 films that were released in past years. The producer and director of the recent hit film Lakshmi consulted Prasad Naidu before announcing the film’s title. “I and V.V.Vinayak, the director of the film, sought his advice for the film’s title. He advised us to select the title Lakshmi and said the film would be a big hit,” says producer Nallamalupu Srinivas. The film, which released on Sankranti was a hit at the box office and actor Venkatesh claimed that this film had the highest openings of his 20 year film career.
According to Naidu, actor Mohan Babu had consulted him about titles for his recent films, but ultimately ignored his advice. The films Political Rowdy and Sri were flops. “I told him both titles were not suitable and he should change them, but he didn’t listen,” says Naidu. “Some actors have ego problems and there is no rule that everybody should accept my titles. When I suggested a different title for Mohan Babu’s film Sri, I was told that his son and unit members were not happy with it,” he said.
Naidu claims that once a film’s title is publicly announced, nothing can be done to change its outcome at the box office. In the case of Mohan Babu, the actor subsequently asked Naidu to somehow rescue the films, but it was too late. He claims that two days ago, Mohan Babu’s wife called him from the US and asked about her son’s film Asthram. “I told her the film would be a flop because the title is not good. I also told her that we can’t do anything about it now as the title has already been announced.”
He says actor Rajasekhar consulted him for the title of his forthcoming film Rajababu. Named on Naidu’s advice, he is naturally optimistic about its success. “This film will do well at the box-office,” says Naidu.
Rajasekhar’s wife, Jevitha says she began to believe in Naidu’s predictive powers after he said their film Nayakudu would only have an average run when they announced its name, which proved to be true. She decided to consult him for Rajababu. “He told us it was a good tile and that Rajasekhar would shine in this film.
We will have to wait and see what happens after the release of this film,” she says.
However, Naidu’s predictions have also made him many enemies. He says he has received threats because of his forecasts. “The predictions on my website has irked many top producers. They have called and threatened me, but I will continue,” he says.
