Unzipped flashers’: Perverts thrive in Korattur station
Friday October 7 2005 08:41 IST
CHENNAI: ‘Unzipped’ Romeos are the menacing order of the day at Korattur Railway Station.

The Station has become a haven for sexual perverts, who roam around ‘flashing’, sending school and college-going girls, and women into a flurry.

On Wednesday, many students of a self-financing arts and science college for women at Korattur bore shocking witness to a 45-year-old man, who sat on the Railway station over-bridge, with his ‘fly’ open and a bag by his side.

When girls passed by, he was ‘free for view’ and when men crossed him, the bag became a handy cover. Too scared to confront the man, the girls just had to turn their heads the other way and flee the scene.

“Such happenings are nothing new to us,” a student of the college lamented. This has been the case for the past one year, and different men at different points of time, have been seen resorting to obscene gestures.

The college even went to the extent of sending two staff members as escorts for its students, which deterred the ‘flashers’ for a day.

However, students see no end to this problem as nearly five men, aged 20-45, have been frequenting the area over the period of one year.

Even the middle-aged are not spared.

A 40-year-old woman, employed at another college in the area, says, “Such acts of perversion are so disgusting and affect us. We carefully take each step on the over-bridge, half-expecting a ‘flasher’ at every turn.

“Girls are pained by such incorrigible deeds,” she says.

Moreover, the Korattur Railway Station has very little shade from the Sun, forcing the girls to stand on the stairs of the over-bridge, right near the spot where the ‘flashers’ firmly plant themselves.

In this college alone, nearly 600 of the 1,250 students from all over Chennai use the train services. And so do several students of five schools and two other colleges nearby. The menace cries for immediate police attention, the students said. The college management brought the issue to the notice of the local police.

When contacted, the police said that the issue had been brought to their knowledge only on Wednesday. They have promised to put an end to the issue.
