Ganguly is fighting a wrong battle, says Nasser Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said here that Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly is fighting a wrong battle (spat with coach Greg Chappell), though he has been an excellent captain for India.

Ganguly's record speaks for himself and captains fight their own battle but at the moment he is fighting a wrong battle which is not good for Indian cricket.

"However, even I have gone through similar incidents with England coach Duncan Fletcher when I was leading England and was going through a bat patch. The only difference was that we did not let anything get to the media. Whatever happened in the dressing room stayed there", he added.

"Even though I and Duncan disagreed on many issues, we remained united. But in Ganguly-Chappell case it will be a concern for India in the future. The problem is bound to arise. Although I don't know Chappell personally, I think he should be given a chance to do his job as he has brought in with the aim of making India the best team in the world", the Chennai born batsman said.

When asked about England all rounder Andrew Flintoff's claims in his book that he was shot at during a one-day match in Delhi during England's tour of India in 2001-2002 under his captaincy, Hussain, did not elaborate and just said "I remember Andrew mentioning something during the tour".

When asked what should be England's strategy during their forthcoming tour of India where the visitors will be playing three Tests and seven one-dayers, Hussain said "when I captained England in the subcontinent, I had reasonable success. The current England team has established names in Strauss, Trescothick, Flintoff, Pietersen, Harmison and the two Jones".

"They would be more aggressive and positive attitude. However, they have to be careful. What Australia tried in India by placing an attacking field and enforcing the follow-on backfired on them but England coach Fletcher is a brilliant tactician and will have a few tricks up his sleeves", he added.

Hussain, who retired from international cricket last year, said the Indian team had enough firepower to beat the Aussies on a regular basis and should try to become the best team in the world under Greg Chappell.

World XI name three spinners for one-day match

MELBOURNE, Oct 4, 2005 (Reuters)

The World XI will complement a strong batting line-up with three front line spin bowlers in their 12-man squad for the first of three one-day matches against Australia on Wednesday.

With the selectors expecting the pitch under the roof at Melbourne's Docklands Stadium to play low and slow, they have included spin bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, New Zealand's Daniel Vettori and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi.

West Indies opener Chris Gayle and South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini were the two players left out of the final squad.

Indian batsman Virender Sehwag is likely to open with Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara in an attacking and powerful batting line-up, that includes nine players with test centuries. India's Rahul Dravid, West Indies Brian Lara, South Africa's Jacques Kallis and England's Kevin Pietersen will make up the middle order, with all rounder Andrew Flintoff likely to bat at number seven.

In the field, captain Shaun Pollock and Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar are expected to share the new ball with Flintoff and Kallis the other seamers.

Each side will be allowed to use one tactical substitution during the match.

Team: Shaun Pollock (captain), Virender Sehwag, Kumar Sangakkara, Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Brian Lara, Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff, Daniel Vettori, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi.

Tendulkar, Lara the best I've faced: Flintoff

October 01, 2005 16:43 IST

England all-rounder and Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff says Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara are the two best batsmen he has come across, but the Indian holds an edge over the West Indies genius.

"I would say Lara and Sachin Tendulkar are the two best batsmen I've faced, although you always think you have more of a chance when you are bowling at Lara," says the flamboyant cricketer in his autobiography 'Being Freddie - My Story So Far.'

According to Flintoff, "Tendulkar has a very simple technique, whereas Lara has a lot of movement at the crease and looks very flashy, but his hands are so good."

He, however, does not elaborate what he meant by Tendulkar's simple technique.

Referring to Lara's record-breaking innings of 400 in the final Test in Antigua, Flintoff says, "The word genius gets bandied around a lot, but in his case I think you can call him that."

Flintoff also makes a fleeting reference to the "lot of criticism" England spinner Ashley Giles received for "what they call" negative bowling by coming over the wicket to players like Tendulkar, but justifies it, saying it was his job in the side at that time.

"If you look at where he bowls from around the wicket, he gets his front foot so close to the stumps it's like a lot of other spinners going around the wicket. Ashley has taken going around the wicket a lot further, he uses it as a wicket-taking option throughout the game."

The then England captain Nasser Hussain had asked Giles to bowl in that fashion to frustrate Tendulkar in the second Test at Ahmedabad in 2001.

Chappell's e-mail was spot on: Blewett

October 02, 2005 16:35 IST

Former Australian Test batsman Greg Blewett refuted the charges of former South Australia paceman Paul Wilson that India coach Greg Chappell was a poor man-manager.

"He [Wilson] didn't see eye-to-eye with Greg," Blewett said.

Greg didn't put up with his manner and that's may be why he has come out and said what he has," Blewett in a local daily in Adelaide.

Commenting on the recent spat between Chappell and Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, Wilson had accused the batting legend of "destroying many careers" during his four-year stint as the coach of South Australia.

"Paul was a different character that some said was pretty selfish," remarked Blewett as he defended Chappell praising the work he put in with South Australia during his two separate tenures.

Blewett's remarks received a thumbs-up from South Australia Cricket Association (SACA) general manager Harvey Jolly who said Chappell deserved credit for shaping the association's "fruitful" youth programme.

"From our perspective, Greg set things in motion which we are seeing the benefits of now," he said.

Blewett termed Chappell as a scrupulous man undermined by a "hard-to-work-with Ganguly".

Despite the BCCI's claim that a truce has been worked out between the two individuals, Blewett expressed his doubts saying it was a "nothing decision."

"I don't think Greg will hang around just to make everyone happy," he said. "I think he'd be fairly frustrated with that outcome."

Blewett, who played 46 Tests for Australia, is unsure whether Chappell would tolerate any untenable situation.

"Greg was appointed to take India to a different level," said Blewett.

"Greg's a man of principles. If he finds he can't work in a certain environment, something has to happen. Ganguly goes or he goes," he continued.

"It is alleged in cricket circles that Sourav isn't the easiest guy to work or get along with," Blewett said.

"I think Greg's e-mail was spot on. I could see it happening before my eyes."

Fraser talks of how Sourav, in his first game, had asked Michael Atherton to take his sweater off the ground. Not a teammate thing. Fraser says this too was natural for Sourav’s character.
