It's a known phenomenon in Tollywood. Directors who debut with a hit film are doubly nervous about their next ventures. It's the same routine with everyone and most young directors shiver at the thought high expectations from actors, financiers and producers. Newcomer Surender Reddy is facing a similar situation with his next project after delivering a hit like Atanokkade. He was heralded as the new whizkid on the block and flooded with lucrative offers. But he chose producer V Ramesh Babu's Ashok as his second project after Atanokkade.

Fan Of NTR

"I agreed to do this film because of NTR," he says. "I'm a huge fan of NT Ramarao and I always wanted to work with his successors. They're the ones who gave me a break under the banner of NTR Arts and I'm really grateful to Kalyan Ram and Janaki Ram for that. I would have loved to work with the charismatic NTR but since that's not possible, his grandsons were my natural choice who're carrying his legacy forward," he explains.

About Story

Talking about his first project, he reveals, "It was quite easy because I was filming my own story. I find it difficult to work with someone else's concept. How about Ashok which has been written by Vakkantam Vamshi. "That's the scary part of the whole project. I'm as nervous as if it's my debut project and that too, with NTR in the lead. Come to think of it, this film is going to be my real test. Vamshi has handed me a pretty neat script and I hope to turn it into a decent film," he replies.

Experience

Surender isn't new to filmmaking. He had worked with directors Kranthi Kumar, John Mahendran and Usha Kiron Films. "After having worked under two directors, I fantasised about having my own signature style," he says.

Money Management

It's not easy to turn down offers which promise quick money for a greenhorn. How's Surender managing? "I won't deny the importance of money in our lives. It does get you a lot of mileage. But I would like to be known for my body of work. Just like the Ram brothers who gave me a break with Atanokkade, I wish to guide and support new talent, once I've established myself as a director," he states.

Balakrishna Sentiment

Voicing his superstitious belief he say, "Balakrishna directed the first shot of Atanokkade and I got him to do the same for Ashok. I'm sure Ashok will also be as big a hit."

So, does he believe in superstition over talent and good work? "Sentiments and beliefs play an important role in everyone's life. As a creative individual, I'm more comfortable going with my ins t i n c t s, " he says with a smile.
