Mahesh Babu steals the show again

Athadu

Cast: Mahesh Babu, Trisha, Sonu Sood, Sayaji Shinde, Brahmanandam, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Nasser
Director: Trivikram Srinivas

The much-awaited film Athadu is inspired by the Hollywood flick Assasins. Director Trivikram Srinivas, who is known for his soft films, chose to do an action movie this time and he has been successful. Technically, the film is almost as slick as its Hollywood counterpart.
The story goes like this. Nanda Gopal alias Nandu (Mahesh Babu) is an orphan who has grown up to become a professional killer.

He has a faithful ally in his friend Malli (Sonu Sood). A political leader Siva Reddy (Sayaji Shinde) hires Nandu to fake a murder attempt in order to gain sympathy and thereby garner more votes. Things go horribly wrong when someone really shoots dead Siva Reddy. Nandu escapes the scene of action and while on the run he meets one Parthoo (Rajiv Kanakala), who is a runaway himself, returning home after a gap of 12 long years.

Parthoo sadly is killed in a police encounter before he reaches home and Nandu takes his place and goes to his village, impersonating Parthoo. There he meets a girl Puri (Trisha), who falls in love with him. The remaining story deals with how Nandu becomes a saviour of sorts.

Mahesh Babu, steals the show with his performance and his appearance. He has done a good job of portraying the varied emotions that are required of him through his role, first as the assassin, then as the impersonating Parthoo and as Trisha’s lover. Trisha’s performance is just adequate as the village belle.

Prakash Raj as the CBI officer fits his role perfectly. The funny scenes with Bhrahmanandam are also entertaining without being painful. Tanikella Bharani, Dharmav arapu and Brahmaji also do their bit to bring on the laughs.

K.V. Guhan’s photography is exemplary and the action scenes thanks to Peter Hynes have turned out well. Music by Mani Sharma is good. While there are a few bits of the film that are unconvincing and there are parts that drag on unnecessarily, the fact remains that this is only a movie and one has to suspend disbelief for a while and enjoy the film for what it is – just entertainment.
