here is another good review on ATHADU...

This is almost a gap of 1 year for a Mahesh babu film. His last film Arjun released on 18th August, 2004. This one being Mahesh's film after a gap, a brilliant writer in the project, lot of working days spent for acheiving the right nodes, hit music- many reasons can be quoted on these lines to prove why the expectations are high on this film. Athadu is in production for quite sometime. Finally, the film is out. The film stood to the expectations and is a definite treat for Mahesh fans

With a history of soft-romantic scripts such as Nuvvu Naaku Nachavu, Manmadhudu, Malleswari and another romantic to his directoral credit (Nuvve Nuvve), Trivikram Srinivas, for a change, dished out an action film. Mahesh played the role of a professional killer, Nandagopal. Here comes a terrific performance from Mahesh Babu. With clear and confident emotion maintained in the entire film, he is perfect. He moulded himself to fit the role of a professional killer. He touches heart in emotional scenes, he brings laughter in the scenes with Trisha and he is thrilling in action & dance sequences. He is a born actor.

Story runs like this: Nandu and his friend Malli (Sonu Sood) are contract killers. They do the executions together. It is usually Nandu who executes the killings and Malli plans the escapade. Opposition party leader Siva Reddy (S iyaji Shindey) plans a fake assasination attempt on himself to gain symapthy for the upcoming elections. Siva Reddy's friend Batchi Reddy (Kota Srinivasa Rao) is given this task. Batchi Reddy approaches Nandu and Malli for this work. The deal is made that an attempt should be made on Siva Reddy but he should survive. On the day of the attempt, Siva Reddy is really killed and Nandu, Malli are trapped. Somehow they escape and Nandu makes his way to one village Basarlapudi and becomes Pardhu. Nandu actually met Pardhu (Rajeev Kanakala) on his way to the village. But only, Pardhu is not alive now. Nandu, in the disguise of Pardhu, tastes the love of relations through Pardhu's grandfather (Nazar), Pardhu's maradalu (Trisha) and Pardhu's mother-in-law. So who really killed Siva Reddy? How can Nandu enter the village in the name of Pardhu? These form the plot and should be seen on the silver screen.

Prakash Raj played the role of Anjaneya Prasad, a CBI officer, in pursuit of Nandu. Though it is a routine role for him, there is a bit of novelty and Prakashraj did a good job. Trisha is cute in her role. Her role is a typical village belle ala good hearted and mischevious. And Trisha perfectly fitted the role. Shiyaji Shinde, K Viswanath, Giri babu, Kota, Sonu Sood are in the cast. They did their roles to the content. Sunil, though did not generate great comedy, is good in his role. It is Brahmanandam who took up the comedy job and it turned out wonderful. One wonders why an actor like Charanraj is casted in not so important role. Thanikella Bharani and Brahmaji appear in other roles and did perform decently. Rajeev Kanakala, though he appears only for few mintues, did his role well.

Trivikram Srinivas handled story, screenplay, dialogues and direction for this film. He did a balanced job with every department. Though there is not much new in the story line and it resembled a mixture of Hollywood and Tollywood films, the presentation is what it matters and Trivikram did an excellent job. Being a writer himself, dialogues are very good. Songs are conceived excellently. One wishes if the placement was better. A few slow moments and songs placement should have been taken care of.

Here are a few excerpts of pen pun of Trivikram:
• Gun ni choodalanuko thappuledhu, kani bullet ni choodalanukoku.. chachipothavu
• padhellakey anni choosestey inka paatikellaki TV ni thappa inkemi choosthadu (Trisha about Mahesh)
• Meerentha silent gaa untey murder antha violent gaa untundhi (Thanikella to Brahmaji)
• Kooturni immantey question bank ni ichavu enti thandri (Giribabu about his daughter Trisha)
• Nenu ninnu choodadaniki vasthey, aa tharuvatha dhenni choodadaniki nuvvu undavu (Mahesh to Kota)

Music by Manisharma is an additional asset. Songs are all well composed and well conceived by the director on the screen. Especially the title song, Gaaram Cheisn and Pilichina Ranantava songs are really good. Re-recording is effective. Background score is decent. Cinematography is fantastic. Color tones used in the songs is effective. Guhan did a wonderful job with his camera. Actions scenes are okay but not as great as initially talked by the makers. Audience going with high expectations on the action works might be disappointed. Climax fight is very good though it reminds of Face Off and End of the Days climax episodes. Editing by Srikar Prasad is content. Sets by Thota Tarani in the songs are attractive.

First 20 minutes of the film runs at a fast pace and good tempo. This tempo is maintained for half of the first part. Excitement slows down a bit after Mahesh enters Basarlapudi. Interval bang is interesting. It is the first part of the second half that goes on slow track. This part is filled with Trisha's mischevious works and songs. Again the film picks the pace and progress towards the climax. Climax is made very good and will leave a good mark with the out-going audience.

This is a must-watch movie for Mahesh fans and a good film for the rest. The film is stylish and has got good production values. Review by: Phani
