Half yearly report
44 films were released this year up to June 30. It has been reasonably good year with 9 films turning out to be hits and super hits. Another five may break even. In the first six months Telugu industry has a success ratio of nearly 32 percent, which is the best report card in India.
The biggest blockbuster so far is Mahesh Babu’s Okkadu directed by Guna Sekhar, which is likely to get a distributors share of Rs 30 crore! No other film could come anywhere near this magic figure. It also created a craze for Mahesh Babu who is now the real superstar.
The other hits are Ravi Teja’s Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammai (ANOTA), Raghavendra Rao’s 100 film and the launch pad of producer Allu Arvind’s son Allu Arjun and Aarthi Agarwal’s sister Aditi Agarwal’s Gangothri, which is a sleeper hit. Nitin and director V.V.Vinyak’s Dil, while another big hit was Kabbadi Kabbadi which made a star out of Kalyani.

Looks like Telugu films are looking at Tamil Nadu for inspiration not just for themes alone.
Increasingly Telugu films are set in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu now.
Recently we had Sambha, the NTR Jr starrer, set in the temple and silk town of Kancheepuram. Previously we had several movies pictured in Chennai.
Now for the Mahesh Babu's latest flick they have gone the whole hog ----recreated an entire city in Tamil Nadu in all its glory and grandeur.
For Arjun (Maheshs new film), the producers have re-created the hoary town of Madurai with the gigantic Meenakshi Amman temple.
The set, put up at Gandipet here, is so real and life-like, that many have actually said that they have a feeling that it is indeed Madurai. The man behind this fabulous set is Thota Tharani, the only art director to have won a Padma Sri.
The set has come up at a whopping cost of Rs.four crore and it has taken nearly six months to build it ---- in terms of size it is approximately 350 feet by 200 feet (Just a few feet less than the original).
How did Tharani work on this gargantuan set? I made a drawing of the set in a fortnight as I was not given permission to photograph. I made several sketches of the place and then went on to work.
Tharani, who has won the National award for his painstaking re-creation of the Dharavi slum for the film Nayagan, is exactly no stranger for such real-like projects. He put up the eye-boggling apartment for the film Anjali. The Meenakshi Amman temple that he has come up with is said to be the biggest ever after the one that was built for Devdas.
Tharani says that his aim is to create things as close to reality as possible.
Perhaps, the Gods do feel so.
Somebody had told Tharani that he would soon build a temple. And soon Arjun and its famous set happened.
The Gods must be happy now.

The man who looks like a 'Charming Prince' , Mahesh Babu is the darling young hero of the Tollywood now. As we feel there is no need to introduce Mahesh Babu to the telugu people since his father has a strong history in Indian Cinema. Mahesh Babu values hard work and respects his profession as well as he respects the elders.
Mahesh Babu started his carrier as child artist and completed his bachelors’ degree (B.com) at Loyala College, Chennai.
Mahesh Babu first appearance on the screen was by the film ‘Needa’. It was a very brief appearance and then he appeared in ‘Poraatam’. After seeing ‘Poraatam’ famous producer Doondi predicted that Mahesh would grow into a star one day, as the prediction turned out to be true today. Mahesh Babu has been ushered in as a hero with the film ‘Rajakumaarudu’ which was directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. This film is well received at Box Office and decided to do a movie for the banner R.K. Film Associates (K. Raghavendra Rao’s banner) every year. For him, it’s acting that matters most, though of late, his obsession with success has increased. “After all, in this industry that’s what matters at the end of the day,” he explains.
He is unlike the usual breed of Telugu heroes. Mahesh Babu likes to keep to himself, speaks his mind and prefers to be left alone, if he had his way.
After successesful hit movies like Murari and Okkadu came the turning point in his career and he ensures he is doing something different than others.
While speaking to greatandhra.com “After Okkadu, I surely cannot repeat myself. The audience too have a lot of expectations. Though Nijam didn’t do well commercially, it showed a different me. So, it’s time for people to see another face of my acting skills,” says Mahesh.
Acting simultaneously for two home productions, one each for his sister and brother, Mahesh looks least hassled. In fact, he seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself. “I like it this way. Because now I am involved in a little bit of everything. Since they are home productions, we are more relaxed and do exactly what all of us think is good for the film.”
Mahesh Babu is very much director's actor. “I totally trust the director. I don’t believe in doing any homework. I do whatever the director says, spontaneously.” Both of his current movies Nani and Arjun to be heavy budget films which he says are exactly kind of films he loves to do at this point in his career. He says “I tried to do the kind of films I believed in, but they didn’t work at the box-office. Now, I am doing the kind of films that the audience would love to watch,” says he.
His other film Arjun is with Gunasekhar, the man who gave him stupendous success with Okkadu.Mahesh Babu says “I have a huge responsibility. Once I am done with both my commitments, I will think of other projects, though there are some scripts in the pipeline,” says Mahesh as he packs up for the day.

It is well known that the hit combination of Mahesh babu and director Gunasekar are doing the film 'Arjun' with almost the same crew that worked for 'Okkadu'.The film's story was kept under wraps for a long time to infuse enthusiasm on the movie.
In Madurai Meenakshi temple set where the hero Mahesh babu meets heroine Shriya. Naturally love blooms and the hero's heart is set pining for the heroine.
This leads him to realise that the heroine is infact sister to the local goonda, but then goonda's sisters too have a heart and so she falls for the hero. So the hero takes the drastic step of whisking away the heroine to Hyderabad under trying circumstances.
Hero and Villian clash happens. Hero wins the game. Looks like this movie is loosely based on the lines of Okkadu.
Prakash Raj is playing the role of Bala Nayakar, the last heir of that dynasty. Sarita is playing his wife. Keerthi Reddy is playing Mahesh Babu's sister. Raja is paired up with Keerthi Reddy. Ghattamaneni Ramesh Babu is producing this film on Krishna Productions Private Limited banner.
Madhura Meenakshi temple of Madhurai town is recreated by Thota Tarani in the outskirts of Hyderabad. The initial estimate of the Madhura Meenakshi temple set cost was 2 and half crores which was supposed to be built in 3 months. But, it took 6 months with over 500 workers constructing the set. The total cost of this set turned out to be 4 crores.
This set was constructed in 5 acre space of Padmalaya Studios near Gandipet. This set consist of gaali gopuram, pond and garbhagudi. The real temple in Madhurai was constructed over 5 centuries from 13th century to 18th century. And its not surprising that a replica of the same was constructed in 6 months in Hyderabad.
