It was often hard to believe that Sania Mirza was really the loser yesterday.
The 18-year-old from Hyderabad was the one whose Centre Court debut attracted the curiosity, hers was the personality which triggered a chain of interviews, and hers was the performance watched by vast numbers on television in India.
Her conqueror, Svetlana Kuznetsova, the US Open champion and a contender for the Wimbledon title, had just achieved a dramatic 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 revenge win. But it did not look like it. By comparison with the attention given to her opponent, she was largely ignored.
Mirza showed once again that she is very unusual. She had already become the first Indian woman ever to win a WTA tour title, stirred the millions of the sub-continent by reaching the third round of the Australian Open, and created a sensation by outplaying Kuznetsova, the world No4, in Dubai four months ago.
Through it all she had displayed a boldness, an articulacy and a love of the limelight which has brought predictions of a Bollywood career further down the line. Now she handled the Centre Court occasion debut with characteristic flair, swivelling into brilliantly struck forehands with astonishing racket-head speed, gradually overcoming her nerves, recovering from her mistakes, making a dramatic surge at the finish, and handling bristling press conferences as though they were a natural extension of her life.
"It was a dream and I loved it," she said. "I have played in front of big crowds before but to be honest I was nervous. This was Wimbledon Centre Court, not any old centre court, and you just have to go out there and try to win.
"I didn't do that but it was close. That's all right," she said, knowing what would follow. "Now that I have won a title they will expect me always to win," she had said earlier in the week. Sure enough, the dreaded question came at once.
"Could you explain, after winning the second set tie-break, what went wrong?" she was asked. "Nothing went wrong," she replied. "What separated us was the volley at break point at 4-5 [in the final set], an amazing volley from her."
In fact Kuznetsova looked capable of winning the match in a manner much less fraught than it became, but curiously failed utterly to make the best of her ability to play effectively both in the forecourt and the rear court. She also gave the match its colourfully unpredictable air by lapsing into inexplicable errors against an opponent who was going for broke so often that mistakes from the Indian were inevitable.
The Russian found it hard to explain her performance afterwards. "I was just tense. I didn't know what to do. Just nerves got to me. I played... I just don't know.
"When you get to top 10, top five, you just have all the pressure on you. This takes a while to understand."
One thing Mirza already understands is how to handle pressure. She has to live with constant attention, which has brought intruders into her house and two guards on duty at her home, all night, every night. Shopping and excursions become an ordeal.
By comparison to lose an hour's sleep the night before yesterday's match, to cope with a stomach muscle strain, and to play with two damaged ankles strapped up, did not seem too much. She rationalised it as though she could conquer it all. Even though she did not, the attempt was impressive.
"I talk to myself a lot," she said, grinning. "I do it so much, I talk to myself when I'm not on court as well. I tell myself to keep calm. I still lost my temper once but it was a great match."
That outburst of temperament came early in the third set when she was unable to contain a sharp-angled Kuznetsova backhand attack and counter-attacked into the net. It cost her a break of serve and lost her the momentum created by the capture of the second set.
The racket was pounded into the ground in fury, the frame cracked and the umpire delivered the code-of-conduct. "I gave what I had," Mirza concluded wisely, meaning that she felt that she had not thrown away the match. "I think she won it, " the Indian added.
But many people hardly seemed to notice that the Russian was victorious. For the record, Kuznetsova next plays Nicole Vaidisova, a 16-year-old Czech. A surge into the quarter-finals looks possible. Perhaps then the fifth-seeded Russian will feel a little less neglected |

Svetlana Kuznetsova, the US Open champion, should be the player that Davenport meets in the quarter-finals but she nearly stumbled in the second round against Sania Mirza, an 18-year-old Indian playing her first Wimbledon. Already a star on the subcontinent, where she needs a bodyguard in public because she is becoming as famous as the cricketers, Mirza took Kuznetsova to three sets on Centre Court in a match lasting 2hr 17min.
The first Indian woman to win a WTA title or reach the third round of a grand-slam championship, before losing to Serena Williams in the Australian Open, Mirza has the power and audacity to go much farther but will need to cut down on unforced errors. Her first big scalp this season was Kuznetsova, whom she beat in straight sets in Dubai, but Mirza was unable to pull off a repeat despite the Russian's erratic form. Centre Court will want to see more of the tempestuous teenager breaking the mould of the traditional Indian woman as well as records every time she steps on a court. |
