We should be happy, at least now, after watching the movie APARICHITHUDU that there is one director in Indian cinema who takes us through reality route of Indian conditions and find solutions in his inimitable style. He is Sankar. He reflected this mind already through his greatest box office hit BHARATEEYUDU. Kamal Hasan and the make up given to him have added to his success. It was a kind of appeasement of Indian hearts by showing at least there is one director who is conscious of Indian conditions, social life, traditions and also of rogues and terribly corrupt who are enjoying the fruits of independence earned by a great generation, by sacrificing their properties and lives. If we sit back and think as to what should be the role of cinema, we discover that Sankar is already at proving it with films he is making, the latest being APARICHITHUDU.
True, none can venture to invest the amount of money that director Sanker invests in his films of this kind. He has to do it to obtain the quality and effect he aspires to get. If it was Kamal Hasan in BHARATEEYUDU it is Vikram in this film. Till yesterday Vikram was “Vikram of ‘Sivaputrudu’ fame” But now he is ‘Vikram of ‘Aparichithudu’ fame”. We are sure he will stay so for a long time to come till somebody makes a sensible film with him with better purpose and quality.
Sankar and a few members of his ream were in Hyderabad and spoke to the press, almost sharing their joy with all. The market report about its commercial progress appears to be quite encouraging as of now. And those from Telugu film industry, especially writers and directors and the super duper stars who star in super budget films, should emulate Sankar and his team and should go for films that have some social purpose, at least when they are made for big stars like Chiranjeevi. They should never be like ‘Anadarivaadu’ even if it is meant for a mere entertainment. Imagine ‘Andarivadu’ is message oriented purposeful film. Nobody repents, especially the artiste, even if the film flopped.
The other aspect that concerns the industry is its cost factor. For a big budget movie one has to expand his market and go for other language areas. In south the practice of releasing in almost all the south Indian languages is common now. If one works for simultaneous release like Mani Ratnam and now Sankar does, the story will be different. All this talk is in relation to films with high budget top star cast films. In the case of APARICHITHUDU one gets to his or her mind another film BHARATEEYUDU, just because the objective of both the films is same. Both deal with ‘Crime’ and ‘Punishment’. The crime is social crime. But when you start analyzing the latest film, you feel the ‘solution’ part of the film is made to look more confusing than the methods he has shown in Bharateeyudu. Here in this film Sankar clubbed the punishment with fantasy. And he gave a medical term to it – ‘Multiple Personality Disorder’. But what we see in the film is a Hollywood influenced science fiction.
It is here the film distracts the thought process of audience. It takes time for the audience first to assimilate why the hero is changing from one form to another. There are three ‘Avatars’ in this. And in the climax he inter-changes from man and beast and back. In between Sankar also created a romantic personality of the artiste Vikram with the name Remo, a singer, with whom the heroine instantly falls in love with. Thus Bharateeyudu is down to earth cinema using the cinema medium and make up art to its best advantage, ‘APRICHITHUDU’ is mixed with the so-called personality disorder, suddenly changing the tradition bound Ayyangar, a lawyer, into beastly looking personality vesting in him super powers, reminding us of ‘Superman’ or the hero of Hollywood film ‘Mask’. These are nothing but fantasy that definitely dilutes the effect and film’s objective that ‘guilty will be punished’. These two film’s main aim is that and also plead that our country is touching lowest ebb in crime rate and corruption only because there is lack of ‘fear punishment’. Therefore the director who says to press that he made this film with that objective of resurrecting that objective from oblivion, made it look half finished job. |
