You might have liked the movie after watching it on tape or CD but for moviegoing public that spends money getting to a theatre and watching it on screen, it is a disappointment.
Surya liberally abused the basic tenets of movie making in this film. Here are a few examples:
1. For a big star like Mahesh, the focus of the movie should be on Mahesh. He has to be the central character. Instead the central character in this movie is Ashok Galla, the kid. Ebglish version BIG worked because the focus after the switch was on Tom Hanks and continued to be so until the end. In Telugu, Surya keot switching between the two so the focus continued on the kid's travails rather than on Mahesh's travails as a kid in a grown up's body.
2. A movie can have a prologue, body, climax and, in special cases, an anti-climax. There will be a narrative flow in that case. Surya screwed that up in his screenplay and direction by getting his narrative flow mixed up. Here's how. The story was about a kid who runs away from home because he thinks his mother doesn't like him. Halfway through the film he realizes he is wrong and learns of his mother's love for him. That was the climax. End of story. By introducing another story in between about the marriage between Mahesh and Amisha, Surya tried to start another story with its own prologue, body, climax and anticlimax. Combining the two into a single narrative flow was the biggest mistake because he could not justify why even after Mahesh learns about and is absolutely convinced of his mother's love and sacrifices for him, he still needs education on what a mother's love is all about based on Amisha's giving birth to a child. That too from Kota.
3. There was no convincing rationale for why Surya suddenly kept switching between differing movie styles in narration and execution. Sometimes it is a serious issue about a child lost in the world but the mother is shown as a cartoonish character in her behaviour. Similarly when Amisha realizes the gravity of her situation as her husband is a kid and she is now the mother of a kid's child, she suddenly becomes a cartoonish character in the way she responds to this. There is not an ounce of conviction in that or in the villains' characterizations; they're cartoony characters. Surya should have stuck to the cartoonish narrative style or he should have stuck to a regular narrative style.
Too many cooks spoil the broth. In Nani's case, switching between narrative themes even while switching between two plots did just that. |
