A controversy is brewing. The decision to raise the ticket rates (theater) for Chiranjeevi’s Andarivaadu in East Godavari district is all set to evoke opposition from many quarters. Producer Allu Aravind has reportedly brought an interim-order from Andhra Pradesh high court to raise the ticket price in East Godavari district. Hence the film is now running in the district with more than normal prices. It should be recalled that the Y S Rajashekar Reddy government has brought down the ticket rates across the state to save the film industry from slump.
So the ticket rates were slashed in many centers from May itself and in many other theatres the rates were implemented from June 1st.
In East Godavari, the theatre owners that running Andarivaadu is selling the tickets at old prices i.e., not with the slashed prices. Claiming the court order, it is reported that some theatre owners even went overboard and hiked the prices arbitrarily in the first three days of the film, which is illegal.
When asked the clarification on the controversial decision, producer Allu Aravind parried the question. He was speaking to reporters today (June 8, 2005) at Film Chambers informing the public that anti-video piracy cell has instituted a toll free number (1600 4250 111). When a journalist questioned him logic behind the hike in ticket prices of Andrarivaadu, he was evasive, saying the forum is not appropriate to discuss it and would meet the press regarding this later.
Questions and loopholes
1.How can one raise the ticket prices saying the film’s budget went overboard (hypothetical)? If so, every producer in the industry claims in same way.
2. And how can one bring the court order pertaining to only one district? What is the so special about a single district?
3. Has the court really given the interim order?
It should be recalled that Allu Aravind’s distribution company Geeta Arts distributes the film in East Godavari. And Chiranjeevi also asked the government to reconsider its decision to slash the ticket prices. He actually suggested that producer should be given authority to decide the ticket prices in the first two weeks of a big film’s release. |
