Chiranjivi Fans’ Attempt on the Life
of Number One Editor A. Bala Reddy
I believe in God. I swear in the name of God every word in this (report) is true. Any attempt on my part to distort the facts in narrating this unfortunate incident to you will invite the wrath of God. I was protected by none other than the ‘Daiwam’ (God) against Chiranjivi’s fans’ murder attempt on me.
A Bala Reddy, Editor & Publisher, Number One
The day was June 3; the time 3:30 pm. Number One’s office is located on the third street east of chief minister Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy’s residence. The address of Number One is Street No.1, Sagar Society, Road No.2, Banjara Hills. I was sitting in my room in the office. The office assistant entered the room and announced that a youth from Suryapet wanted to talk to me about an advertisement in the publication. I asked him to be sent in. He came in and set across the table to me. He claimed to be a ‘fan of hero Venkatesh.’ He said they were a group of friends from Suryapet and his friends were waiting downstairs. They had come to release an ad in Number One on Malleswari’s record of 100 days, and wanted to know how much it would cost for half-page; how much for color and how much if it’s black-and-white. I gave him the rates.
I asked him why the ad now when Malleswari completed 100 days long ago. There was no clear answer from him. ‘I will be back later,’ he said, rising. The way he spoke and that grin on his face while he left, made me suspicious. Reporter Battula Prasad walked in while I was working on the computer and spoke to me for ten minutes. Midway through the conversation, he answered a call on his reliance mobile saying ‘Stay put in a corner – I’m coming right away.’ Five minutes later, he was gone.
Super Hit editor B.A. Raju called me up and asked where I was. I told him. ‘Stay there – I’m coming,’ he said. He calls me before coming on important work. ‘Where is the office?’ he asked, still on the line. He had been here before, but presuming he had forgotten, I gave him the address anyway, and he said it’s okay.
After another five minutes, vaastu expert Gouru Tirupati Reddy called. He is an elderly person. ‘I am coming to the office in ten minutes. Can’t climb all those stairs to the third floor, better you come downstairs,’ he said. ‘Alaage,’ (Yes, Sir), I agreed.
There is regular deeparadhana (worship with ritual oil lamps) for Venkateswara, Siva and Vijayaka idols in my room. There is now a luminous glow in the lamp.
The phone rang; it was B.A. Raju’s voice. He is on Street No.1, but said he could not locate the place. ‘Look for the sign “Sagar Society Street No.1” and come there – I’m coming out into the balcony,’ I said, walking out from the room. Office assistant Baachi followed me into the balcony.
Looking down, I found nearly fifteen people (I didn’t quite count them), closing in on our building from the street. The pace at which they were closing in, made me suspicious.
‘If anyone comes tell them I am not here,’ I said, even as I moved towards the stairs to go down. ‘Alaage,’ said Baachi.
I stepped on the lower step of the second floor stair, when I came face to face with these five stocky men, with a few more behind them - they stopped on seeing me. I stepped ahead. ‘It’s him!’ cried one of them. I looked at him – he was the one who came to me about Malleswari. ‘Do so many have to come to release an ad?’ I asked, looking suspiciously at them.
‘Ye raa…(a demeaning way of addressing someone, in Telugu),’ said one, accosting me with a menacing look, ‘so you are the editor? Writing lots of stuff on our brother (anna) Chiranjeevi.’ The rest of them surrounded me, blocking my way.
‘What do you want? If you have any objections, you may give me in writing,’ I told them softly, and tried to move on.
‘Halt!’ shouted one.
‘I will be back just now – go upstairs and be seated in the office,’ I said.
‘Move, and we will kill you!’ they growled at me.
‘This Johnny-come-lately (meaning NTR Jr.) wants to compete with Chiranjivi, raa…? Calling yourself Number One, you have been writing stupid things,’ along with their invectives came the rank odor of their drinks. I was pushed against the wall.
‘You write Simhadri made collections of twenty-five crores, raa…! Don’t want to stay alive? We will wipe out you and your family,’ their words betrayed their murderous intentions.
I tried to pacify them: ‘Not here – let’s go into the office and talk.’
‘What’s there to talk with you, raa,’ said the one in the front, even as he sprung his clenched fist at my face on the left. I felt dizzy. Before I could know what was happening, flew in another blow from another fellow. They were all around, spewing venom at me. I was all alone. My staff was in the office upstairs, out of earshot, oblivious of the goings on here. Any weakling would have slumped on the stairs at their blows, but I managed to stand against the onslaught. It’s time for some self-defense.
I pacified the one in front of me, who was trying to fling one more at me. They caught me by the shirt-collar, and I tried to shake them off. More blows in my face; my nose was bleeding.
They have seen my blood! I could hear my teeth clatter; I shook with fear. My life is threatened: the signals reached my brain. I called my staff aloud, but no one could hear me. If only I could somehow reach downstairs, I thought, there would be the public on the street. I moved to go downstairs, and the blows resumed. I was full of anger and pain.

Seeing my face soaked in blood, the irate public got hold of the lone miscreant and prevented him from escaping. I asked the staff to fetch a constable from the police station.
