Pawan Kalyan is coming up with 'Gudumba Shankar' after a gap of more than a year following the 'Johnny' debacle. This is the transcript of a brief chat with Nagababu, executive producer of Anjana Productions and brother of the powerstar Pawan Kalyan.
What kind of a film is 'Gudumba Shankar'?
'Gudumba Shankar' is an out and out mass comedy entertainer.
Could you tell us a bit about Pawan Kalyan's character?
Street smart character. A bit on the cunning side too. But an absolutely harmless person. A kind of guy everyone loves to bump into once in a while. The characterization of this person is done with the audience in mind. Our only goal is to entertain them and give value to every rupee they spend in the theatre.
What about the response to this unusal title for the movie?
People are apprehensive a bit. We see a lot of them calling to tell us that the title is great, but we know that they are not being true to us. After the film is released and watched by the experts and the audience, you will all tell me that there cannot be a better title for the film than this.
How did you Meera Jasmine come across as the right woman for the heroine opposite Pawan Kalyan?
Anybody who had seen 'Run', the dubbed version from Tamil, will not be surprised by the decision. The role demanded an innocent looking girl and Meera Jasmine was the perfect choice. We didn't even think twice about casting her. And she's gone down well with the crew. She's a real hard worker and doesn't crib.
You mean others crib?
I don't have to say that. You hear these things about producers getting into trouble because of the artistes not cooperating or being demanding. She is not that kind. That's all. Moreover, She is very talented and doesn't take too many takes to complete a shot.
Pawan Kalyan has a separate following in the college going audience as a lover boy. Do you think this is the right time for a mass entertainer for him?
Youth doesn't mean the group that goes to college or school. If you think hard you will understand that youth audience themselves are big mass fans. The only difference in the film that you will see of Pawan Kalyan is the fact that he does not go to colleges like in 'Thammudu' and 'Khushi'. But the fun will be there and that's what the youth want. Isn't it?
When the fans of Pawan Kalyan are expecting more movies from the star, why is he doing a movie once in two years?
There seems to be a glitch in the planning somewhere. Ideally there should atleast be one movie every six months. It will happen in due course of time.
Do you see 'Johnny' affecting the business of 'Gudumba Shankar' in anyway?
No way. 'Johnny' is history. Once in a while I see the scribes focussing on that. That is one of the biggest reasons Pawan doesn't want to talk too much to the media. 'Gudumba Shankar' will break all records. Even that of 'Shankar Dada MBBS' (he smiles)
With both the brothers movies releasing between each other, isn't there competition at home?
We don't talk about business and work at home. We always are a very close unit and all this talk will only irritate us.
