Diwali bombs

None of the four most hyped films of the year will go on to become blockbusters. Eagle-eyed trade pundits predict that though some of them could recover their production costs, they will start losing steam from the third week on.
Says trade analyst Vinod Mirani, “There will be no long run for any film, including Veer-Zaara. Not one of them is entertaining enough, and they all lack repeat value.”
This is alarming news for the industry, which has a whopping
Rs 125 crore (and some seriously big reputations) riding on them. “The openings of the films have not matched the industry’s expectations,” says analyst Komal Nahata.
“This is a big shock,” says Amod Mehra, another trade analyst. “For instance, a Yash Chopra film not doing 100 per cent business on its first day is unheard of.”
But while Veera-Zaara will recover its cost thanks to the Chopras’ hit-and-run tactics of flooding the country with an all-time high 500 prints, Ram Gopal Varma’s Naach has been declared a complete washout, and Aitraaz, produced by Subhash Ghai, has already begun to limp, with 60 per cent collection across the country.
Traditionally, Diwali is bonanza time for Bollywood. Big filmmakers plan their releases around this time to catch the family crowd.
This year, with Eid following closely, and an extended weekend, was to be no different.
Surprisingly, what seems not have worked in Bollywood this year is the love story. “Most of the new films are intense love stories. Diwali is a time when people want to go to the theatre with their families. They want emotion, drama, comedy, and light, happy films,” adds Mehra.
But even though the four big films are likely to be duds, the actors themselves have won praise for their performances.
Taran Adarsh says, “Shah Rukh has won praise for his performance, while Priyanka Chopra is drawing in the crowds. Akshay Kumar too has shown good growth as an actor.” Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Antara Mali may have lost out at the box-office but will take heart in the praise their individual performances have won.
• Veer-Zaara
Yash Chopra’s film in seven years and a brilliant performance by Shah Rukh Khan fails to hold the audience’s interest in this slow love story that demands serious suspension of disbelief.
• Mughal-e-Azam
Brilliant dialogues, tender moments between Anarkali and Salim, and great chemistry between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala may make audiences nostalgic but at the end of the day you can’t tamper with a classic.
• Naach
The RGV stamp coupled with a realistic love story and high-voltage performances would have pulled in the crowds, had it not been for too many abstract, dull moments and tepid music.
• Aitraaz
A bold theme, even bolder dialogues and a sizzling, seductive Priyanka Chopra will not pull in audiences in a market already saturated with skin flicks.

Has the initial euphoria for Veer-Zaara died down?

The initial euphoria for VEER-ZAARA which translated into an extraordinary opening response for the film at most places, is said to have marginally subsided after the release of the film, with the film getting mixed reactions from the audiences. Exhibitors point out that the classic tale of love with all its grandeur and magnificience has no doubt appealed to a large section of the intelligensia, but the same cannot be said of the masses who are left searching for the light moments in the film. The biggest deterrent however is the length of the film, say exhibitors. "The audiences are wary of seeing long films these days, especially if they are of the serious kind. The length of VEER-ZAARA is definitely going against it," says exhibitor Manoj Desai of G-7 muliplex.
At Fame Adlabs, Andheri and Fame, Malad, where the film was released with a record number of eight and nine shows respectively, the exhibitors have decided to reduce the number of shows, besides restoring the regular admission rates. "We are planning to knock off the matinee show and take a decision on the 3 p.m. show depending on the response the show gets in the next few days. We have also decided to reduce the admission rates which we had hiked to a maximum of Rs 180 in the first week run of the film. We would have continued with the increased rate structure for another week had the film continued with its extraordinary march at the box-office," says Neeraj Goswami, Manager, Programming, Fame.
Goswami feels that the price-hike and the number of films in opposition are two factors that have gone against the film but the bigger problem that is impeding the film's prospects is its three and a half hour length.
The programing people at Cineline theatres have also decided to reduce the number of shows. But Sanjay Dalia, Programming Manager, Cineline theatres, is hopeful that the film will have a long and sustained successful run at the box-office. "The film may not have appealed to the teenagers and the college-going crowd in a big way due to its classy feel and the lack of light moments, (apart from those with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini), but the Muslim audiences seem to have endorsed it in full measure. This section will make up for the lack of mass support," says Dalia.
However there are exhibitors like Arun Sharma, Programming Head, INOX, who continue to have tremendous confidence in the film's prospects irrespective of its mixed post-release reports. "We opened the film with 10 shows and intend to continue it. The film continues to register a 90 percent occupancy at our chain of multiplexes, be it Goa or Calcutta, where it has been widely appreciated. If I have to rank the four Diwali releases business-wise, VEER-ZAARA will still be at the top, followed by AITRAAZ, MUGHAL-E-AZAM and NAACH, in that order," quips Sharma.

I guess you will agree that SKR falls way back in looks in comparision to his counterparts and coming to acting I would call it more of a OA than acting...he has F...king same kind of expressions for all scenes in all of his movies.

10 years back Salman Khan's Hum aap hai koun? relased it creted history not only in india , overseas also.Many producers realised overseas potential and they started making candy floss films.At that time Amitabh bachhan left film industry and his last film was kudah gawa.Other top stars at that time were anil kapoor,sanjay dutt and sunny deol.
Sanjay dutt gave super hit kalnayak,but he was accusesd in bombay blast case .sunny deol never changed his action image and Anil kapoor was very popular at that time stopped acitng in subash ghai and yash chopra films and started acting in south remake movies.
At that time upcoming heroes were Salman kahn,amir kahn and sharukh khan .Sharukh kahn's performance in Bazighar and darr attrcted many top producers particularly Yash chopra .so started his superstar career with DDLJ and it creted history.after that he gave continuos flops and he faced tough competition from amir and salman.again yash chopra gave life to him with Dil to pagal hai.later salman kahn involved in cases and amir khan wanted to change his image.so sharukh was only available khan .At the same time cable TV came to all over india and media statred giving lot of hype to sharukh for his films as well as awards.filmfare was was popular in 70 s and 80s beacuse of honesty in giving awards for talented actors.
But in 90s they changed their style and giving awards based on superhits and not for performance.
sharukh got of lot waards because his films were super hits eventhough his performance was routine nothing new
Sharukh Khan is undisputed boxoffice king in overseas particulaly in UK.
but truth is most people in india don't like him beacuse of his routine roles and where as amir khan was eqlally popular with diffrent roles.
Most Pakistanis and Bangladesis don't like Amir khan because he acted in sarfarosh an ati pakistani film.and also they don't like amir beacuse he will show lot of patriatisam.And also they hate many indian acors who acted in anti paki films.But sharukh was exception.He never acted in anti pak movie.To their plasure Even in his recent movie Mai hoo naa(sharukh also producer to this movie) they showed an Hindu as terrorist(All kashmiri terroists are muslims)
I heard from some pakis that they want sharukh khan no1 in bollywood another 10 or 20 years so that everybody will forget amitabh and other superstars.just like moghals ruled india defeating hindu kings,they want muslims should rule india in all fields.
Even I surprised the way they spent money for sharukh stage shows.Most spent hundreds of dollars of their hard eaned money for these stage shows.
But I don't think sharukh will succeed in long term if he continues acting in love stories.
I think in India he was not popular as the way media hyped.most websites like Indiafm always gave rankings based on overseas colllections.so almost all sharukh films are hits irrespective hit or flop in india
In India his movies only opening are good,but he is not popular in many places in india except in metros.
chalte chalte collected 18 crores in india and 15 crores in overseas.Overall 33 crores.
Devdas 35 crores in india and 20 crores in overseas and total is 55 crores .
Kalhono ho 33 crores in india and 15 crores in overseaes and total around 48 crores
Mai hoo naa 32 crores in inda a dn 12 crores in overseas and total around 45 crores.
If we look at other heros hits .Sunny deol's Gadar collected 60 crores in India itself
and hrithik roshan's Koi Mil gaya 50 crores in india and 5 crores in overseas.
Recent times most of Sharukh hits came from yash chopra and karan johars movies.
Again media also hyped his movie Veer Zaara because of his overseas poplularity.In UK this film created new records.
But in India cllectons dropped from third day onwards and like earlier sharukh film it might collect around 30 crores or even less depends on repeat value.
But testing time for him is next month release Swadesh.after long time he is acting diffrent role and whenever he tried for diffrent roles his movies failed at boxoffice.So we can how long he will continue
