Shankar Dada, How long U run?
It’s a matter of days and weeks over any movie release in the present day Telugu film industry. If it’s right, what hangs over Shankar Dada MBBS is a clear fall-down in the number of audience at the theatres. It has directly influenced the collections over the last couple of days.
The first round of survey all over the state says that SDMBBS made frenzied openings in the first week. The situation is closely followed by downward trend on the collection graph. The first week share in Nizam, barring Adilabad, touched Rs 3.26 crore with 90 prints in over 120 theatres. The collection is claimed to be Mega history. But will it make a balanced marking on the Collection-Graph in the future weeks? Tollywood’s trade specialists are silently watching the developments.
Running second week, the number of theatres showing SDMBBS dripped from 120 theatres to a mere 85. In Twin cities, the number of theatres was reduced from 40 to 20. Of this seven theatres will lift the prints in the coming days to accommodate new releases. Same trend is likely statewide. Survey in Tirupati says the movie is running short of audiences, finding it difficult for all the shows. Same is the case with Nellore.
No doubt, SDMBBS opened to a big hit talk, which it might actually be. But, what is happening now? The movie’s expected collection stands over Rs. 30 Crores, even to beat Tagore records. Tagore, yet being a remake, turned out a blockbuster, sustaining the heat for several weeks and clearly touching the 100 days. Can the same magic be repeated with SDMBBS? The answer is not being sure. Following are a couple of observations.
SDMBBS is basically the remake of a Bollywood blockbuster. The original Munnabhai MBBS made its CD-rounds in a number of households in the twin cities, and other Nizam areas. So, the story of our Telugu version holds no curiosity for them. Likewise, the A and B class audience from Chittoor to Srikakulam are familiar with the story, which is one year old. Can this be the same case with Tagore? Certainly not. Its Tamil original “Ramana” is known only to a bare minimum of audience in Andhra Pradesh, mostly in Chittoor and Nellore districts, which hold good Tamil or Tamil-speaking, or Tamil-familiar population. You can’t expect a Hyderabadi, Adilabadi, or Amalapuram guy to relish a Tamil film, even it be a classic! So naturally, Mega Star’s cast in the role of a corruption-killer made an amazing click. Interestingly, Tagore held less or no curiosity among the audience of Chittoor and Nellore districts. Of course, Tagore’s mega climax was shot at length in Tirupati when the day had even brought over two lakh crowd to the shooting location.
