Theme: Megastar goes to medical school to please his dad
Story: Remake of Munnabhai MBBS from Hindi with the Megastar dances and Telugu flavor is Shankar Dada MBBS. Megastar Chiranjeevi is the Dada; with Srikanth ATM (any time murder) is his sidekick. Dada and his gang are natives of Hyderabad. They have a great time living, dancing and collecting money for doing dadagiri. Shankar Dada’s father Mr. Sharma, played by Girish Karnad believes that his son is a doctor running a hospital for poor, as when he visits his son a setup is made to make him believe that his son is a doctor. Mr. Sharma has a friend who has daughter (Sonali Bendre) and also a doctor, he would like Dada to marry. When Mr. Sharma realizes that his son is not a doctor but a Dada, he feels shamed, and his friend rejects the alliance. This is when Dada takes up on himself to become a doctor, marries the girl his father would like him to, and makes his dad proud.
Several situational changes are made from Munnabhai MBBS to suit the Telugu audiences and mass appeal of Chiranjeevi. Srikanth as the sidekick (ATM) performed well. The same sequences from Munnabhai MBBS where laughter is the best medicine, be nice to your fellow humans along with symbolic nuances of the megastar movies are incorporated to please the Telugu audiences.
Pawan Kalyan appears in his Gudumba Shankar get up for a few seconds with Srikanth and Chiranjeevi dancing.
Chiranjeevi looks good and his scenes with ATM and as a Dada work well. If you have not seen Munnabhai MBBS, this movie will meet all entertainment expectations. Sanjay Dutt who performs the gangster roles with natural ease and fits the role to the T, Chiranjeevi plays dada with much more flash and dramatics that will please his fan base.
Unlike Munnabhai MBBS, Shankar Dada MBBS has good music and dance and Megastar does not disappoint with his steps. Costumes and other gaudy elements associated with dadagiri are prominently showcased in this movie. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing a lot of bright colored shirts and worn out jeans come onto the streets of Andhra Pradesh again.
The movie was reportedly sold for 26 cores, which would fetch a very handsome profit for the producers who spent 16 to 17 crores. Numbers of actors were initially considered to play roles played by Srikanth, Girish Karnad and Paresh Rawal. The final product is a mega movie with Chiranjeevi carrying the burden of how successful the movie will become in making money for the exhibitors.
Artists: With Megastar in the movie there is little scope for any one else in the movie. Srikanth as ATM provides able support to Dada. Sonali as usual looks ravishing and beautiful and played her role well. Girish Karnad, Paresh Rawal and others did fine with their roles. Item numbers were a good attraction, and Anjala Javeri looks nice.
Music: Music in this movie full of mass elements. This is the first time Devi Sri Prasad composes music for a Chiranjeevi movie, delivers good music to suit the Dada themes. Chaila Chaila, Naa pere kanchanamala, Pattu pattu, Shankar Dada MBBS are completely mass songs and Ye Zilla Ye Zilla by Adnan Swami has variety. By adding Megastar’s dances to these songs they are very entertaining.
Megastar himself lends voice to portions of the songs, and does incorporate well with the theme of the movie and situations. The music elements fit well with the presentation of the movie.
In summary: Is a hit movie from Chiranjeevi. From Anji and the long gap since his last release, Sankar Dada MBBS will please the fan base and provide some relief to the Telugu Film industry, which has seen a lot of losses this year. Watch it and enjoy the dadagiri.
AV’s verdict: With an estimated 600 screens showing worldwide this movie can touch the expectations of the produces, distributors and fans. AV predicts a big hit worldwide.
