Those are the things that only time can answer! But for now, she has put her party's interests before her own! Do you think that she wouldn't have verified the constitutional/legal challenges/implications of taking up the post before hand?
Infact, I remember reading somewhere about BJP's idea to come up with a proposal to ban foreign born people contesting for the position. This logically implies that there is no law today that prevents these people from contesting for the post.
I read an column yesterday somewhere and unfortunately three lines have been deleted from that article today. Had that article been there, that would have answered some of the questions raised here.
Altough I can't write those lines that appeared in the article verbatim, I can certainly give u the essence of what it meant.
Mrs Gandhi dumbfounded her critics during the election campaign and in its immediate aftermath, but did so largely by achieving consensus against the odds. Mrs Gandhi has done very well in recent years. She has learned to speak Hindi very well, wears saris, prefers Parathas over Pasta. But still some of the Indians are outraged by her foreign origins.

I dont think she was ever quoted as saying she wanted to be the PM. I must admit thought that she has set a precedent by becoming the leader of the ruling party but not the PM.

Also, the decision seems to have come after meeting the president, apparently he had referred to the attorney general about the legality of Sonia becoming a PM. Sorry Guys-
You are correct. I was thinking about the VP Singh govt formation and wrote Deva Gowda. I do certainly think, Sonia will accept PM post if the Congress gets majority in the Parliament.
For now, we proud Indians can take solace in one thing, that is atleast for now she is not the PM. One doubt I have is how independent the govt can be from Sonia(she being the congress presedient).
Titles are rolled.. we have to wait and see what happens next in this greatly twisted opening of this drama.

That's the difference between intelligent politician and stupid politician. I don't think Sonia want to be that kind of PM. If you go back in History, Rajiv did take similar kind of move when DEVA GOWDA became the PM with support then 68 member party BJP(though that was a great move by BJP at that point). Rajiv though had major share of seats in parliament sat in the opposition. Now sonia made similar kind of move. Now CONGRESS has to listen every small leader from CPI to BSP with CMP(common minimum program).
Though I am a BJP supporter, had SONIA become the PM, BJP would have gained a lot in next election. Now Congress still has chance to get majority when Manmohan Singh's govt fails.

I think this is a great political move by Sonia. Now she knows Congress withouth CPI support doesn't have full majority. She knows CPI won't let the Congress govt to stay long. By rejecting the PM, she improved her chances of getting full majority to Congress and becoming PM.

People talk abt the Developement during MASK MAN time.
Mask Man started ruling from 1998.
The economic reformes started in 1991. The telecom reforms started in 1985-86. The IT boom started in 1994.
Actually the BJP was against this open market,they wanted Swadeshi. But they didn't have any alternative. They had to follw.
Their long standing Finace Minister Yaswanth Sinha was Finance Minister during ChandraSekhar time and Joined in BJP later.
Aurun Shourie , the most famous editor of Indian Express joined BJP, every one knows reasons. They were the people, behind some developement during 1998-2003. Not the real BJP people. |
