Can't call Yuvaraju an inspiration because there are a million such subjects, all mostly done by Shoban Babu in Telugu even before Hindi guys remade them.

GG mama,
Original Coolcat ne. Mahesh chesthunnadu, migatha vallu cheyyatam ledhu ani kaadhu. Just wanted to steer discussion away from Nani to discuss more on how those inspirations (by the way these are the story writers' / director's inspiration) affected Mahesh's growth and stardom.

Vamsi was started without a script and they shot as they went but it brought him the tag of a Hollywood style hero because of th MI stunts that were copied. That raised hopes of an enduring action hero for fans.

Takkari Donga is an amalgam of lots of similar Westerns not least Good, Bad, Ugly and MacKenna's Gold. This also kept up fans' aspirations of a full fledged action hero.
Both these movies did not dent Mahesh's reputation despite the films not doing as well as expectations, they actually enhanced his reputation.

Bobby was inspired by the Baz Luhrmann version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with a little bit of nativity thrown in. After the last 2 films where glimpses of a developing action hero were divulged, a weak characterization as a chocolate faced lover boy slightly dented Mahesh's rep but he got good marks for his comedy and dialogue delivery especially in scenes with Prakash Raj. The movie did not go down well with fans though I personally liked the movie except for the excessive violence that was more gratuitously filmed than required by the story. It wasn't well choreographed.

Okkadu was inspired from West Side Story. The entire introduction scene including some of the music and the finger snapping and chases were used but Gunasekhar succeeded in adapting the rest of the story to Telugu nativity by developing his own thread and screenplay from then on. Gunasekhar is a genius in this case because no one would ever imaging a director transplanting dance competitions with Kabaddi competitions. By the way among all the remakes or inspirations West Side Story, only Okkadu was successful. The rest like Bekhudi, Josh, Prema Yuddham (Nag) did not work. The action hero tag was reinstituted and elevated to an exciting level for Mahesh in this movie.

Nijam was also inspired (though I don't know the name of the original) and did not dent Mahesh's reputation despite controversy over indifferent direction, suggestive scenes and length mainly due to great acting by Mahesh and continuation of the action hero genre, with old style vengeance thrown into the mix. Right subject, right role, right time, wrong set up as the producer/director cut too many corners. Nevertheless this role will be remembered as one of Mahesh's best ones.

Nani, of course, is based on Big and several other movies of that genre. Big was not the first in that genre, it was preceded by atleast 2 similar movies that were duds at the BO. It was also released in competition with another movie with the same subject, which flopped. Tom Hanks' take on the role and his kiddish looks and genuineness made Big a hit and Hanks a star. Big was also followed by several films of the same genre including Robin Williams' Jack. All were flops. The jury is still out on the latest version 13 Going On 30 starring Jennifer Garner. We have to wait and see what impact Nani will have on Mahesh's career in the short run. There being no action in this film, is it a message that unless there is substantial action (as in the forthcoming Arjun) people will find it difficult to accept sensitive, non-action oriented roles from Mahesh? Or is it just an aberration as an experiment gone wrong, and people may still accept Mahesh in non-action oriented roles if they are well scripted and well executed? I personally think people will accept him in non-action oriented roles if they are well written (like, say, as in Nag's Manmadhudu or Santhosham as opposed to the run of the mill Trivikram stuff like Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu, Nuvve Nuvve, etc.) but we'll have to wait and see.

TI mama,

Anji's first 45 mins (the part where heroine comes from US, gets into a bus, meets ms, and bus breaks down etc....) is a straight lift from Romancing the Stone.

Except Mahesh's first 2 movies, all other movies were freemakes or "inspirations" from mostly Hollywood films. Can you name the "inspiration" or freemake originals for them? Some of them are inspired in large portions, some total subjects.
Starting with Vamsi, Takkari Donga, Bobby, Okkadu, Nijam, Nani
